One thing I absolutely love about being a Richmond based portrait photographer, is the James River! There are so many great ways to incorporate the James into the background of your portraits and one of my favorite spots is down in Hopewell, at Old City Point Waterfront Park. Technically, this location is on the Appomattox River, but it flows right into the James. While this location is a bit outside of the Richmond City limits, it is definitely worth the drive for a great family portrait session.
Perks…well let’s talk about them! First, access to the water without worrying your little ones will be carried down the rapids. Let’s be honest, the rocks and the water areas down on Belle Isle are gorgeous and very ideal for an engagement session or a family portrait session with older kids. However with the rapids and slippery rocks, this location is not super conducive for little ones. At Old City Point Park, you can dip your toes right in from the sandy(-ish) shore, skip rocks and let your little ones be free!
Secondly, City Point has a parking lot with plenty of spaces just 100 feet from the water making this super ideal for family portraits in spring, summer or even the fall.
Finally…the glow! If it happens to be a sunny day on the day of your photography session, the glowy light is absolutely the BEST!
I offer Richmond River Mini Sessions at Old City Point Waterfront Park every spring and summer!
