Location Inspiration

Where should we hold our session?

There are so many amazing portrait location options in the Richmond area! One of the many reasons that this city has my heart! I love to travel as well, so if you have an out of town location in mind, please let me know and I can provide out of area travel investment information.

HERE ARE MY
 RICHMOND LOCATIONS!

favorite

TREDEGAR, BROWNS ISLAND & BELLE ISLE

While there is quite a bit of walking involved in this urban style shoot, it's totally worth it! You get SO much including elevated train tracks, exposed brick, the river, bridges, and even a wide, rustic field, that looks like you are a million miles from downtown!

THE RICHMOND CANAL WALK & BROWNS ISLAND

This artsy style shoot includes portraits along the Richmond Canal Walk with a backdrop of colorful murals! This pairs well with Browns Island!

BYRD PARK & CARILLON

Byrd Park has beautiful oak trees, cobblestone and lots of glowy light around sunset. The Dogwood Dell Amphitheater offers a sweeping lines and stonework and is just steps from the Carillon. The Carillon provides a gorgeous architectural element in photographs with it's beautiful curving steps and balcony. CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION! The building is off limits, but the rest of the park is open. BONUS!!! There is a little playground that is usually a good motivator for the kiddos! This location is stroller friendly.

Maymont

Maymont is a 100-acre Victorian estate and public park in Richmond. It contains a historic mansion, an arboretum, fountains, a gazebo, an Italian style garden, a Japanese garden and bridge and a waterfall. Keep in mind there is a bit of walking involved in this shoot, and it is not very stroller friendly, so I don't reccomend it for families with several little ones.

Virginia State Capitol

Virginia’s State Capitol building sits a top Shockoe (Capitol) Hill and faces out past the skyscrapers of downtown to the river. While you won't get any river views, you will get a gorgeous, bright, crisp, white background with beautiful elements of line and shape. This location photographs beautifully all year long, but is one of my FAVORITES IN THE WINTER! This location is stroller friendly. Street parking is required, but there is not too much walking involved.

LIBBY HILL PARK & SHIPLOCK PARK

Libby Hill Park is in Historic Church Hill and provides the most amazing view of the river and the city skyline. In the late summer, this park has beautiful blooms! It pairs well with nearby Shiplock Park. Shiplock Park is down near the Boathouse Restaurant and offers train tracks and a city skyline, from a bit of a different perspective. While Shiplock park is super cool, it's not the best location for small children, due to the active train tracks.

VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

The VMFA is nestled in Richmond's Museum District on Arthur Ash Boulevard. The museum offers a mix of traditional and contemporary architecture, a pretty sculpture garden, a man-made fish pond, seasonal blooms, and cascading water steps. This location is perfect for active kiddos, as it is very engaging and doesn't require too much walking! Street parking is pretty easy, but there is also a parking deck. It is also very stroller friendly.

FOREST HILL PARK

Forest Hill Park is located on the Southside of the river. It's a beautiful wooded park with a hill that leads down to a pretty lake with a lovely loop to walk around. There is a bridge and stone house near the lake. It also make you feel like you are nowhere near the city, totally a nature lover's spot! The walk is not long and it is stroller friendly, but it is called Forest HILL Park for a reason LOL! The walk to the lake is down hill, so it's a climb on the way back up. This is my neighborhood park and I have pushed a stroller up and down this hill more times than I can count. It's totally doable, but you will have to put a little muscle into it on the way back up! This is a great location for kiddos that like to "explore" and hike!

Bryan Park

Bryan Park is located on the city's Northside, and is another of Richmond's historic parks. Lots of trees, cobblestone, a pond, rustic fencing and a little foot bridge. In the spring, the Azalea Gardens are spectacular! This location requires minimal walking and is stroller friendly. There is a also a playground for a fun reward at the end of your session.

University of Richmond

U of R has a gorgeous campus featuring a lake, a bridge, Gothic style architecture, and a Greek theatre.

CRUMP PARK & MEADOW FARM

Crump Park and Meadow Farm are located in Henrico. The park has large open spaces, rustic wooden buildings, sheep, horses, chickens, long running fences, and giant oak trees. If your kiddos are into animals, this is the perfect location! It is stroller friendly, but the main path is gravel, so I reccomend a more heavy duty stroller.

The White Barn Farm

This private residence is located in Midlothian. I found this special and unique property when I had the pleasure of photographing the owner's wedding on their property, it was literally picture perfect! It features an amazing white, rustic barn, large open fields, and a man-made lake. This location requires an additional fee of $50 and must be booked in advance.

RANDOLPH MACON & THE TOWN OF ASHLAND

This beautiful campus is set in the cozy Town of Ashland and features a fountain, pretty trees, a variety of architecture and train tracks.

Reedy Creek

Reedy Creek is part of the James River Park System. This neat little spot has a lot to offer, specially in the Fall as the leaves thin and the rustic brush looks amazing! You will get a bit of the water's edge, a pretty field, and train tracks in this location. Very minimal walking so it's great for kiddos!

Tuckahoe Plantation

Tuckahoe plantation is the historic boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson. This beautiful property features giant sugar maples, weeping willows, a plantation house, and gardens. There is a $50 fee (per hour) and must be booked in advance.

Agecroft Hall

Agecroft Hall is a Tudor manor house and estate located in the Windsor Farms neighborhood along the James River. This historic property offers lovely architecture and lush gardens. This location requires an additional fee of $50 and must be booked in advance.

Old City Waterfront Park

Old City Waterfront Park located in Hopewell, Virginia provides that perfect waters edge look. With a small sandy beach, driftwood and beautiful trees just along the bank, this location makes a perfect place for portraits especially in the warmer months. Feel free to take your shoes off and dip your toes in! This is a great location for families, as the parking is very easy and requires minimal walking.
